Session 23 — What the Castle Keeps

Area: Castle Ravenloft — The Gates, Round Entry Hall, Dining Hall, Study, Kitchen

Context

Myra is not present this session. In session 22 she used a wish to restore her sister Kyra, who had been in Strahd's keeping since Ironwake. She remains in Vallaki.

Taara is outside the castle, moving around its perimeter. Her butterflies are restless. She has history with Strahd that the party does not fully know, and she is not ready to cross the threshold.

The Gates

The party arrives at the gates of Castle Ravenloft. They are not alone.

From the village road, Mark is running — a large man, a butcher by trade and disposition, moving with the directness of someone who does not often change course. Azhurielle Vaelstorm approaches from the opposite direction, calmer, carrying herself like a merchant who has learned to read a room before entering it. Both have come to the castle for their own reasons. Both stop when they see the others.

The gates open without being touched.

No mechanism is visible. The iron simply moves back, as though the castle has decided the moment has come. After a pause, the group enters together.

Cold fog sits thick in the courtyard beyond. Lightning breaks the clouds overhead at intervals, thunder following through a steady drizzle. Ahead, the keep's main doors stand open, torches guttering in sconces on either side, warm light spilling out across the wet stone. Above the entrance, a round window catches what light there is, its frame still holding a few shards of broken glass.

The Round Hall

The entry hall is circular. The ceiling was painted once — scenes that may have been magnificent, now half-decayed, color gone soft and brown at the edges, figures losing their outlines in the rot. Stone statues of monsters ring the walls from floor to ceiling, bearing weight, too detailed to look at for long. They are the reason the ceiling has not yet come down. Cobwebs hang between them, undisturbed, and the torches set around the hall sputter low, dim enough that the statues are more felt than seen.

Organ music drifts in from somewhere deeper in the castle — sad, and majestic, and a little too loud for what it is.

Before the party moves toward it, a dish approaches. Silver, covered, floating at chest height with the ease of something that has been doing this for a long time. The lid lifts. Inside: pastries, badly gone, soft with rot.

Yager takes one.

When the space where his pastry had been is revealed, a hand is there — pale, still, apparently detached at the wrist. It takes the theft personally. It scratches Logi and Mark when they reach for what remains.

Mark catches the hand. He speaks to it — charm in his voice, a promise of a pedicure delivered with complete sincerity. The hand considers this and accepts. It settles on Mark with the particular loyalty of something that has been treated fairly for the first time. It remains hostile to the rest of the party.

The group follows the organ music deeper into the castle.

The Dining Hall

The next room is centered on a table long enough to seat a small court. Three crystal chandeliers light it brilliantly, throwing hard shadows up the dull white marble walls between the pillars. Every chair is filled with empty air. At the far wall, between floor-to-ceiling mirrors, an organ stands. Behind the organ, Strahd, caped, back to the room, playing.

He hears them enter. He finishes what he is playing and then stops. He turns, stands, and invites them to sit.

Food appears. Drink is poured. Strahd's glass holds something dark.

Logi recognizes it. He tastes his own with caution; the flavor confirms it. Blood — not animal blood. Mark tastes his as well.

It is the blood of someone Mark knew.

What the Castle Has Been Keeping

Strahd shows them the cabinet. Inside, kept alive and used as a source, is one of Mark's former companions. The hand sitting beside Mark belonged to another — severed with care, preserved through means that do not reward close examination.

These were members of an adventuring party that entered Barovia before the current group. They came with purpose and worked against Strahd in ways he found inconvenient. What remains of them is here, in this dining room. Strahd explains this without particular heat. He speaks about protecting the land. His word for what he does is stewardship.

Then he lifts the enchantment.

It has been sitting on both Yager and Mark for some time — a Greater Illusion, thorough enough to make two men who were nearly neighbors in Vallaki fail to recognize one another. Yager had been hunting wolves on the roads outside the city and selling the meat. Mark had been buying it. They moved through the same streets, traded goods, and remained strangers because Strahd had arranged them that way. They were members of the same party.

They recognize each other now, across the dining table of Castle Ravenloft. Strahd watches this without comment.

After Dinner

The meal ends. Strahd indicates they are free to move through the castle.

Logi and Mark ask him directly: will the statues in the round hall come to life?

He gives them the kind of answer that is technically a response and commits to nothing. They take it and go see for themselves.

In the round hall, looking up, the statues do appear to shift — barely, just enough to notice if you are watching for it. They are blind. Their hearing is excellent. The party moves with attention.

The Separations

The castle begins sorting its guests.

Azhurielle is returned to the dining room without her choosing to go there. Strahd is waiting. She came to Ravenloft as a merchant seeking information about a deed to a piece of land, and she carries herself accordingly — expecting a negotiation, prepared to advocate. She does not back down when she should. Strahd puts her down without drama.

Khione is the only one who makes it past the statues. Whether through timing, her particular way of moving, or something in the castle's accounting that does not cover her, she slips through and reaches Azhurielle.

Mark is moved to the kitchen. It is a working kitchen — equipment, stores, the specific organization of a space where meals are still prepared for someone. There is also a deer. A stag, large, standing where a stag should not be standing.

Mark has not had venison in a long time.

During dinner, when the kitchen came up in conversation, Strahd mentioned the deer in passing. Logi and Khione heard it and recognized the significance immediately. Vess had fled during the werewolf encounter at the inn and had not been seen since. Strahd caught her in the time between sessions. She has been in this kitchen ever since, held in a form she did not choose. Logi and Khione told Mark plainly: leave it alone. They did not tell him why. Mark had no way to know what the deer was.

Mark beheads the stag in one clean motion.

Logi is moved to a study. Books from floor to ceiling, old enough that the original organization has long since become unreadable. Strahd is there, or arrives — his manner in this room is specific, prepared, the manner of someone who has thought carefully about what they are about to offer.

He tells Logi how to get his fire back.

Logi's wildfire was lost to a misphrased wish — he wished to defeat the fire elemental threatening his village, and the wording cost him his fire, converting everything to water and ice. He hates the loss. It has sat in him as an open wound ever since. Strahd holds information about how it can be restored. He is willing to share it — and he knows exactly how much Logi wants it.

The price is a contract. Strahd can call on Logi for anything — any service, any task, without stated limit. The three exceptions, written into the terms: Myra, Khione, and Taara. He cannot be directed to harm them. Everything else remains open.

Logi signs with his own blood.

Clarified terms (established session 25, retroactive). The contract was for one service, not unlimited service — Strahd may call on Logi once, for anything. It was spent in session 24 on the forced lie to Taara. Strahd's side was likewise a single delivery, made at Ashenwood during the session 25 epilogue. Both sides are now discharged and Strahd holds nothing further over him. The three written exceptions (Myra, Khione, Taara) were never tested and are moot. What was open-ended about the deal, and what made it a trap, was that neither the service nor the delivery was specified — not that there was no end to it. On the Stairs

They reconvene in the round hall. The statues are back against the ceiling, or appear to be.

Climbing toward the upper floors, Mark mentions — not guiltily, not with weight — that he beheaded the deer.

Logi and Khione move immediately.

The Kitchen

The stag is on the floor. The transformation has reversed — the body is Vess, returned to herself in the incomplete way that things forced back into a shape are only partly that shape yet. She is alive. The margin is very narrow.

Logi and Khione work with what they have between them: spells, skills, the focused desperation of people who cannot afford to lose anyone else inside this castle. It is enough. They stabilize her.

She is unconscious. She does not know what room she is in, what has been done to her body, or how long she was held here. She is breathing.

The session ends there.
